Let's Play Hockey! and JMS Combining Social and Mainstream Media

December 18th, 2008

If you’re in Minnesota, you know the three words Let’s Play Hockey before every home Wild game. If you’re not in or from Minnesota, we sorta’ like hockey. :)

More on this below, but JMS Hockey is a program to bring beginning-to-intermediate skaters together for organized, pick-up team play at indoor rinks across the Twin Cities metro area.

They recently started a very cool social media campaign. They have their own Facebook profiles, a public Facebook page (check out the RSS connect for ice times), a brand new Flickr photo group, an even newer YouTube profile, and my guess is you’ll see them on Twitter.

What’s cool is how they’ve integrated this with mainstream media. Fox 9 News has already been in contact with Barbara Garn (JMS head honcho). Turns out they put out a TV segment with her. The video is already on their YouTube profile, Facebook page, on the JMS forum, and now here.

I’m loving the fact that many Twin Cities mainstream media embraces the social Web. Maybe Jason DeRusha at WCCO would like to cover this more? He’s simply the guru of embracing Web with mainstream media.

About JMS, my affiliation is simply knowing both Barb and Andy Baird. When I moved to Minneapolis in 1999, I was looking for something exactly like this. I’m horrible at hockey, yet I just have a blast.

At any level-one session, you’ll play with some people who have some talent along with some who can barely stand up in skates. The experienced people are there to help you with the rules such as icing, off-sides, and not jacking people square in the ribs (separate story).

It’s a hell of a workout, too. 90 minutes straight with a rolling bench. If you’re looking to burn calories, skate with me! I can’t tell you how rewarding it is.

Blog Meme December '08

December 17th, 2008

A couple years ago, a lot of blog memes (tag) were going around. I then got tagged to write five things most people didn’t know about me. It was fun to do something like this around the holidays.

It’s been two years since, and Holly Matson from Geary Interactive tagged me yesterday in a new meme.

So here goes. The ante is up. Seven things that most (maybe it’s closer to some) people don’t know about me:

———-

1) I’m a summer wuss and rarely complain about the sub-zero temps like we’re having now because of it.

2) In social media outlets like Flickr, Twitter, and Facebook, I try to act the same online that I would face-to-face (not that this always happens, but I try).

3) I was a borderline child piano prodigy. My oldest sister Tami still plays at 46 and is awesome!

4) At 39, I’m a proud Grand Uncle of the beautiful, three-year-old Alana. Geez, my niece bred before me?

5) I drove the six-plus hours to Chicago to see the Obama election rally/victory speech pretty much for the hell of it (and I had a couple days off). Here are some Flickr sets from election day, election night, and the day after.

6) With that said, I’m actually neither an elephant or donkey. I’m not much into large groups of people telling me how I should think.

7) This last year, I’ve slacked and gained a few pounds which made it really sweet to break both a buckle and strap minutes before the start of the Northshore Inline Marathon. I was happy though to finish respectable at 2h 18m.

———-

That was seven? Sweet! I thought this would have been harder.

Similar to two years ago, I would like to include the Minnesota Wild’s Derek Boogaard playing tag. Here’s him playing nice-nice recently with some dude I’ve never heard of from Dallas.

Since this is a way to get to know people better, I figure the seven people I tagged would be some I’ve connected with on Twitter, but haven’t actually met face-to-face. So, here’s seven:

Sheldon Mains
Nelima K
Liz Giel
Erik Magraken – hockey fan and attorney from Victoria, BC. Very cool!
Tom Pick
Sam Glover
John Breyault

Tell us yer’ story! :)

New Google MapSpam – How Long Will This One Last?

December 9th, 2008

Thanks to Mike Blumenthal for catching this.

My guess these will be taken down within 24 hours. Notice the same toll free number and fake addresses?

MapSpam

MapSpam

A person named Promoter Local is certainly clever by artificially manipulating local results with fake and/or existing physical addresses. How do they do it? Dunno. A few thoughts come to mind though.

  • This seems very familiar to a different scam from the same geographical area months back.
  • As Mike said, “why would they blow their cover with such obvious spam?”
  • I’m sure this is a funny coincidence, but at least a few of their fake addresses land them right where McDonald’s restaurants are located.

I’m not a betting man. My guess is these results will be barred by this Friday, December 12th. :)

Using Social Media to Help Pass a Political Amendment

December 8th, 2008

Finally put up another post on Search Engine Guide. This time it was an interview with Mike Rynchek of Spyder Trap Online Marketing regarding social media and managing-for-objectives (November 4 vote).

When putting together the post, it came to me that they played a big role in passing a clean air and water amendment called Vote Yes MN.

It turns out that they dominated Google results with some cool piggy-back SEO using social search vehicles such as Facebook and Twitter. Here’s a couple examples.

Yes for MN Facebook Page with over 3600 fans:

Vote Yes MN

Vote Yes MN

They had a decent Twitter following too with just over 400 followers in a very short amount of time.

Vote Yes MN

Vote Yes MN

These two examples don’t come close to the Obama numbers, but it didn’t need to. It’s a much smaller target that happened to dominate niche search engine results.

I voted for the amendment absentee since I was in Rochester November 4. I was having dinner with my sister and bro-in-law while I was voting and joked with them that I was voting for this amendment because “I know the guy running their social media campaign”.

I can only guess that others voted for the amendment because they have seen it prominently on both search engines and social sites. Correct me if I’m wrong Mike, but I believe this clean air and water amendment passed at 59%? If the non-votes counted as “no”, that makes this campaign even better.
