Great City Pages Story on Derek Boogaard

March 29th, 2007

For those who know me a bit already know that I’m a Minnesota hockey fan, whether it’s the Wild, Gophers, or pretty much anything else.

The City Pages has a great story on Derek Boogaard (The Boogeyman), the Wild’s main enforcer. Plus, you get extra excerpts from the piece and videos of his greatest hits.

It’s a really cool read, especially during a controversial few years regarding NHL fighting (think Chris Simon or Todd Bertuzzi).

I just think it’s cool that someone gets to play in the NHL on a regular basis, and prove everyone wrong when they said (and still say) that he can’t do it.

Flowers from Minneapolis/St. Paul… or Somewhere

March 29th, 2007

Sean McGinnis pointed me to a couple of really good posts last night – one regarding out-of-state call centers posing as Chicago florists, and then Matt McGee’s take on it labeled appropriately, when local search isn’t really local.

So, why not see how Minneapolis/St. Paul fares? I did a quick Yahoo Local check for florists in Minneapolis. Luckily, it passed the test – kinda’. The listings are all local, but the sponsored ads on the top and bottom are all “serving your area” national florist call centers.

Update: Please see the comments in this post. Cathy, who runs Florist Blogs caught some things that I did not and gives really good insight about it.

I suppose ad money is ad money, but it doesn’t ensure trust. I was hoping to see the Vanderbloom result closer to the top. They’re right down the street, they have a good buzz about them, and a local merchant gets the local dollar.

Yahoo did better than local.com though. That page is… busy, and as an added bonus they serve up some local pay-per-call ads, “serving your area”. If you search for anything mortgage or real estate related, you’ll get the same type of results. Looking at it closer, I’m actually really surprised on how irrelevant and loud all those ads are!

Looky what I found though!!

Pre-”Interweb”

I absolutely forgot that the same thing happened before the “Interweb”.

Soon… going… to… recycling… bin

The book has since been disposed of properly :)

Quick Thanks to a Mystery DMOZ Submitter/Editor

March 27th, 2007

Posting’s been light lately, but I wanted to give a quick thanks to whoever put this blog in DMOZ. I noticed it first around a month ago, but didn’t really think anything of it.

How do I know someone else did it? Well, the obvious I suppose is that I never submitted it. ;) Looking at the DMOZ description, it’s not one I would have written (although the one written is more than fine!).

I’ve only done a little bit of marketing for this blog, and absolutely zero traditional link building. So whoever you are, it’s appreciated.

Site-Targeted AdWords on a CPC Basis

March 19th, 2007

Brad Geddes writes a piece regarding Google launching site-targeted advertising on a CPC basis. Google launched the same thing on a CPM basis sometime in 2005, and I tried it just briefly for a side project, but stopped shortly after because it didn’t bring any conversions. Hopefully the CPC model will change that - it looks like it’s in beta right now, so we’ll all see soon enough.

More of an FYI, but if you’re unfamiliar with Brad Geddes, he’s a well-known PPC analyst and speaker. Google’s even bringing him to Minneapolis March 29th for an AdWords seminar (not sure if it’s full yet or not).

Weasels Soccer and Gwar #2

March 18th, 2007

One more non-business post to wrap up the weekend…

Congrats to the Weasels FC on a great win today, Danielle’s consistent tenacity, and Adam’s left-footed goal! We finished the indoor season 4-5, which isn’t bad considering the majority of us come close to qualifying for “over-40 huff-and-puff” leagues. I’ll see you guys in a month for outdoor!

(Not pictured: Ali, Heather, and Terra)

Plus, we also have a new, biggest fan. Joolie will be happy to know his name is Gwar #2.

Gwar #2

Some teamates asked me if this was our new mascot, but really… Danielle and Al deemed our mascot to be a weasel over seven years ago. You can’t replace tradition. Our weasel is too cool!

Weasel

Apparently, “Dum Spiro, Spero” means something like “As long as we breathe, there’s still hope”. Since the majority of us are in our upper 30′s and often play against players a good ten years younger, we like to say “We’re not quite dead yet”. :)

March Madness – Minnesota Style (that would be hockey)

March 17th, 2007

Gopher Hockey

With all the “hoopla” (pun intended) of college hoops and March Madness, there’s another sport to follow, and it involves skates, ice, and checking. The Gophers just won the WCHA Final Five, ensuring a number one seed in hopes to make and win the Frozen Four

This is one of those Final Five’s that will be talked about for years. The final between Minnesota and North Dakota is the best college hockey game I’ve seen in a few years, with Blake Wheeler making an ESPN highlight-type overtime goal.

I have some friends at the game and they’re definitely celebrating right now… except for Kevin, since he’s a UND alumni.

Maybe there are some college hockey brackets, just like the college hoops March Madness. If so, I just might bite.

Talking Urinal Cakes

March 16th, 2007

I really don’t know what to think of this…

High-Tech Urinals

It’s an anti-drunk driving campaign focused on guys, just in time for St. Patrick’s day (and St. Urho’s day).

There’s also an audio clip regarding this.

They gave it some buzzworthy thought. It starts out with “Hey there, big guy” and ends with “The future is in your hand”. That would freak me out.

To put it in perspective…

talking urinal cake

Umm…

You can check out your very own talking urinal cake this weekend at Billy’s in St. Paul or at Stub and Herb’s in Minneapolis.

Note: If you’re not a Strib subscriber, you have to subscribe (sweet), but there’s also a free week trial if you’re not already a member.

iBegin – This is Good… Really Good

March 15th, 2007

iBegin

I’m still wading through all of this, and am pretty floored. From trading a few emails with founder Ahmed Farooq a week or so ago, my first words were “this is freaking amazing!”.

Nonetheless, enter iBegin Source - a new local business data portal, where you can purchase business data nationally, by State, at a fraction of the cost of what data aggregators charge, it’s updated daily, it’s accurate, it’s user-editable to help ensure accuracy (think Wiki), and even includes geo-coding.

iBegin Geotargeting

To put it in perspective, you can purchase a Minnesota business list for a thousand bucks, sort how you choose, it’s constantly updated, and you don’t have to re-up every year.

There are a few other things they have going that’s more related to local search, and it’s equally impressive. I’m guessing it’s ok to mention it, but I’m going to wait until I hear it’s ok to do so.

For more info, there’s a really good interview with Ahmed on the Blumenthals blog.

Moving Toward Local Search

March 13th, 2007

Ok, deceptive and cheezy title. My bad. This post is actually about moving companies and local search marketing… but I couldn’t think of a cool title.

I came across an Adage article a few hours ago titled Marketers, Web Bigs Rush to Crack Local-Search Code (subscription may be required). It certainly doesn’t crack any code (they don’t exist – really), but it’s an interesting article regarding an Eden Prairie-based moving company and their balance between print Yellow Pages and local search.

It made me think of what I’d look for if needing a moving company. I’d definitely like to see a Web site, especially one that has some form of online shipment tracking. I’d also like to see exactly where they’re located, business info, hours of operations, and if online consumers say nice things about them.

So… might as well Google up a search for Minneapolis movers.

One-Box results for “Minneapolis movers”

The now prevalent one-box results were decent enough from a proximity standpoint, but I was left a little lost. One site really wasn’t local, and the other results didn’t have much more information than their address and phone number. The first result did have a nice 3rd party “Yahoo Local” testimonial though.

What can these businesses do? Aside from adding your business info to Google and Yahoo local, if you’re in Minneapolis, Dex Online is the default local Internet Yellow Pages provider. Having a free updated profile can help. Search engines like Google pull this data for their local search results. There are paid options as well.

SuperPages, a national IYP who’s profiles also appear in local search results have the business profile option, too. They lay it out to be very easy.

This is just a start, but one nice thing for these is that businesses themselves can go in and enter their own information at low or no cost – no Internet marketing experience required.

Something else to note is that some businesses are savvy enough to also incorporate localized SEO and geo-targeted PPC campaigns. The natural, paid, and local algorithms are completely separate from each other. This can allow a business to own a lot of real estate in search result pages.

Google, Give St. Paul some Love

March 8th, 2007

Thanks to Wardo for pointing it out, Ed Kohler from the Technology Evangelist gives us some good reasons why Google should open up a facility in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Why not? They’ve already made plans to open up niche operations in different parts of the country. Minnesotans are well known for being highly educated, and the Twin Cities is well known for being tech-savvy. Great arts, four major sporting teams, some goofy colossal mall, and a variety of whopping 350 vertical feet of ski/snowboard hills. Hey, we take what we can get! ;) What more could you ask?

Ok, I’m digressing. See what Ed has to say on his idea on Google buying the Ford Twin Cities assembly plant. I’m liking it.
